divergences / connections

Underpinned by the belief that the mere design of a shape can be a vehicle for construction of meaning, my work articulates subtle narratives that seek to elude obviousness. Memory and invention collide to populate this work with characters that suggest, for the most part, bodily associations – keeping themselves, nonetheless, barely recognizable. I pursue profuse variety and, simultaneously, a peculiar sense of coherence in the continuous image. Binding together apparently contradictory elements, encouraging interactions amongst them, favoring their multiplication and travels from some pieces to others (or completely out of the picture plane) are all maneuvers that allow me to explore ideas about connection and difference. A delicate violence lays in the background of these relations, fostering diverse readings in which identities are transformed by their cohabitation – like in a mirrors game.

The relative position of the shapes, the de-centralization of the figures that seem to come in or go out (seduced or repelled by their peers) and thee frequent use of diagonals that cross the field of vision are all decisions that look to establish a dialogue between the formal and the expressive, by tending bridges between the concepts of attraction and rejection that operate actively in the realm of the visual as much as in the nature of our everyday interactions.

I am interested in the investigation of formal and conceptual issues specific to the language of painting and drawing, the relationships between them, and the activation of their vast subjective possibilities regarding imagination and the construction of meaning.
